MULTI-GAS DETECTORS | A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE

Posted by Emma Curthoys
The image shows a lineup of different portable gas detectors from various manufacturers. From left to right, the devices include models from MSA, Crowcon, Dräger, and Blackline Safety, among others. Each detector features a distinct design, display, and button layout, reflecting their functionality for detecting and monitoring gas levels for workplace safety. The background has a dark, smoky atmosphere to emphasize the detectors' application in hazardous environments.

WHAT ARE MULTI-GAS DETECTORS?

Multi-gas detectors are a portable device designed to simultaneously detect multiple gases in the air.

It’s a crucial safety tool used in various industries, including construction, manufacturing, and environmental monitoring.

Most multi-gas detectors are initially designed for confined space compliance, focusing on the four primary gases: carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulphide (H2S), flammable gases (LEL), and oxygen (O2).

However, these detectors are versatile and can be equipped to monitor a wide range of other gases. Many are rechargeable and designed for long-term use, while others, like the BW Clip4 and BW Flex, are disposable but still require regular maintenance. These disposable models are typically discarded after their battery life expires.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MULTI-GAS DETECTORS

Multi-gas detectors are broken up into two types; Pumped, and diffusion.

A pumped gas detector is a specialised instrument used to measure the concentration of various gases in a confined space. Unlike passive detectors that rely on diffusion, pumped detectors actively draw air into the device using a built-in pump. This allows for more rapid and accurate readings, especially in areas with low gas concentrations or poor ventilation.

A diffusion gas detector is a type of gas detector that relies on the natural diffusion of gases to measure their concentrations. Unlike pumped gas detectors, which actively draw in air, diffusion detectors passively rely on the movement of gas molecules from areas of higher concentration to areas of lower concentration.

Some detectors may be available in either pumped or diffused options, whereas other may only be available in one or the other.

MULTI-GAS DETECTOR MAINTENANCE

Multi-gas detectors will face wear and tear every day. Extreme temperatures, humidity, and exposure to contaminants like grease, silicone, or oil can compromise their accuracy. Even physical impacts can affect sensor performance. While regulations vary by location, it’s essential to report that our detectors have been calibrated. A calibration log is typically kept on the device to ensure compliance with workplace and national laws.
