Interview with James Penn (Regional Manager – UK South West at Blackline Safety)
Last week during our visit to Blackline Safety, we had the privilege of interviewing James Penn, Regional Manager (UK South West) from Blackline Safety. Read the full interview below!
1. Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into the gas detection industry?
I have spent my career in the safety industry. Initially in the Marine sector, focusing on safety equipment for the shipping and leisure sectors with a later move into the Offshore Oil & Gas industry, based in Aberdeen. It was in this market that I developed expertise in working at height equipment and gas detection products. I was introduced to Blackline products whilst working in distribution and was impressed by the innovative technology.
2. What do you find most fascinating about working in the gas detection industry? Any personal experiences that shaped your interest?
I know it’s a cliché, but every day is different. I am always learning new things, meeting new people and providing solutions that will ultimately save lives. We receive reports frequently from customers that have had to use our products in a live environment, be it for a high gas alert or for a medical emergency, triggering the SOS latch on the G7 enabling them to share the exact location with the relevant emergency services.
3. How do you see the gas detection industry evolving in the next 5-10 years? Are there any emerging technologies that you’re particularly excited about?
The success of the Blackline range of connected devices is indicative of where the industry is evolving, with more manufacturers adding some form of connected device to their range. Beyond that, sensor technologies are always improving, and it is likely that AI will play a role in the future.
4. Educating clients on the importance of gas detection can be tough. How do you approach conversations with customers who might not fully understand the risks?
I have found the opposite to be true, many of the customers I speak with have a high level of gas safety knowledge but where a product specialist can add value is to demonstrate how newer technology, such as the capabilities of a connected solution, can improve their safety program, increasing efficiency and identify previously unknown risks.
5. In your experience, what industries or sectors are most proactive about gas detection, and which ones might need a bit more convincing?
Gas detection is well established in the Oil and Gas and water industries, and I have found customers to be solution focused and proactive. Companies with established occupational hygiene teams typically have a gas detection strategy in place.
6. Out of all the Blackline products, what one is your favourite and why?
They are all great, but if I had to pick one, it has to be the G7c – Our Portable Gas detector and lone worker device. Customer feedback on the SOS latch pull demo and call return process, always leaves them impressed, with the professionalism and speed of the call handler response. I can even wear the G7c when out walking the dog on Dartmoor.
7. Who has been a mentor or influential figure in your career, and how have they shaped your approach to the gas detection industry?
I’ve worked with some great people and continue to do so now, including the dedicated team at Rockall Safety! I owe a special thank you to my first Boss at Viking Life-Saving Equipment. The training I received at Viking Life Saving Equipment demonstrated the importance of providing the best possible advice to the Customer. In the safety industry, a mistake can have devastating consequences.
8. Can you provide a comment on the relationship between Blackline and Rockall Safety?
Rockall Safety continues to be one of Blackline Safety’s top performing partners in the UK. Blackline Safety have seen exceptional growth this year and have some exciting projects in the pipeline. Rockall’s industry knowledge is an asset to the relationship, and we look forward to developing the partnership further into 2025 and beyond.
