Interview with Richie Crane (Account Manager at Crowcon Instruments.)
This past month, we conducted an Interview with Richie Crane (Account Manager at Crowcon Instruments.). We talked about how he got into the gas detection market, what he enjoys about the industry, the best and worse industries for gas detection and more! Check out the interview below.
Q) Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into the gas detection industry?
Most of my previous roles had an element of sales or account managing, my last role was as a sales engineer for a large gas supplier. They used Crowcon for both fixed and portables, when the opportunity came up to get involved on the safety side of things, I simply couldn’t let it pass by.
Q) What do you find most fascinating about working in the gas detection industry? Any personal experiences that shaped your interest?
I never thought gas detection could and would be this exciting, with its vast industries, applications, new products and dynamic people. I feel my role has a perfect combination of fun and challenges. I treat every day as a school day.
Q) How do you see the gas detection industry evolving in the next 5-10 years? Are there any emerging technologies that you’re particularly excited about?
I always look forward to the regular catch ups with our R&D department and product managers to discuss what is on the horizon. I can’t really say much more other than…watch this space!
Q) Educating clients on the importance of gas detection can be tough. How do you approach conversations with customers who might not fully understand the risks?
An initial chat is usually a getting to know session, what they do, what processes are in place and then offer our recommendations. I always use a consultative approach.
Q) In your experience, what industries or sectors are most proactive about gas detection, and which ones might need a bit more convincing?
Oil and gas and Pharmaceutical seem to have better regulations, protocols and procedures in place. I wouldn’t want to single out any particular industries but one that was recently highlighted is leisure facilities and swimming pools. I would like to see gas detection have similar protocols to fire detection systems.
Q) Out of all the Crowcon products, what one is your favourite and why?
The T4x, signature orange with the same ruggedness as the T4 but comes complete with newer technologies. Longer life battery and sensors and the addition of the Flammable MPS sensor, makes it a firm favourite for me.
Q) Who has been a mentor or influential figure in your career, and how have they shaped your approach to the gas detection industry?
There are too many to mention as this really is the best people industry I’ve worked in. Our previous Sales manager Debbie Airey was and is inspirational. She really lived out Crowcon’s core values and she helped shape me. Thank you Debs.
Q) Can you provide a comment on the relationship between Crowcon and Rockall Safety?
Both our companies are going through a period of growth and with that comes the opportunity to grow together. I think we both have a strong team in all departments. With everyone I’ve met and worked with being very personable and engaging. I feel we can learn a lot from each other and I’m looking forward to seeing where this relationship can go.
