What gas detectors do you use and how many?
Safety is a top priority, and to protect their workforce across various workstreams, they have invested in 892 gas detection units supplied by Rockall Safety. These devices ensure the safety of their engineers in potentially hazardous environments.
This business utilises two types of gas detectors tailored to their operational needs:
- Honeywell BW MicroClip XL – A compact, reliable multi-gas detector designed for everyday use, offering continuous monitoring of potential gas hazards.
- Honeywell BW Flex 4 – Used for their new Service Delivery contract, providing advanced sensor technology and real-time data insights.

By equipping their teams with high-quality gas detection technology, it ensures that engineers can work with confidence and peace of mind, knowing they are protected against invisible and potentially life-threatening gas hazards.
This large-scale deployment of gas detection units reinforces their safety-first culture, helping them maintain industry-leading standards while delivering essential infrastructure services across a range of sectors.
How do you use the gas detectors?
The units are used in multiple stages of a job to detect the presence of dangerous gases before and during work activities.
One of the primary applications is chamber entry. When opening a chamber, engineers follow a strict gas detection process:
- The chamber lid is partially opened, allowing an initial gas reading to be taken.
- If the area is confirmed as safe, the lid is fully removed, and the gas detection unit is lowered into the chamber for a second reading at the bottom.
- Additional readings are taken inside each duct within the chamber to ensure there is no lingering gas buildup before work begins.
Gas detection is equally important for civils crews when digging trenches. There is always a risk of gas accumulation in the ground, which could pose a serious hazard. To mitigate this:
- Engineers are required to carry an active gas detection unit at all times.
- The gas detection unit is continuously monitoring the air to alert workers of any gas presence.
- This proactive approach ensures that any dangerous gas levels are identified before they pose a threat.
Who uses the gas detection units?
To maintain continuous protection, gas detection units are included in every van kit, meaning they travel with engineers to all worksites across their operations.
Whether engineers are working on urban infrastructure projects, remote utility sites, or high-traffic areas, their gas detection units remain readily available for use. These devices provide immediate gas detection capabilities, allowing workers to assess potential hazards before and during each task.
