What is a Catalytic Bead Sensor?
A catalytic bead sensor, also known as a pellistor sensor, is widely used to detect flammable gases and vapours. More importantly, it plays a crucial role in workplace safety by alerting personnel when hazardous gas levels are present. As a result, these sensors help prevent fires, explosions, and other dangerous incidents.
How Does a Catalytic Bead Sensor Work?
Catalytic bead sensors function through a simple yet effective process: combustion. Inside the sensor, there are two beads—an active bead and a reference bead. Specifically, the active bead is coated with a catalyst, usually platinum, which enables flammable gases to combust on contact.
When a flammable gas, such as methane, propane, or hydrogen, enters the sensor, it immediately combusts on the active bead’s surface. Consequently, this reaction generates heat, which raises the bead’s temperature and changes its electrical resistance. Meanwhile, the reference bead remains unaffected, serving as a baseline for comparison. By measuring the difference in resistance between the two beads, the sensor accurately calculates gas concentration.
